European Union Could Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Official States

The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the US on five European individuals working on combating online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’

European leaders including Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans were placed on individuals that were central to campaigns to enact legislation governing US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure US companies to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” stated a senior US official online. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in criticizing the decision.

The bans were enacted on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, while European leaders argue the regulations are essential to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This disagreement threatens to become part of a much broader existing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and Europe.
